Major General Helmick discusses his early life as the son of an Army officer, graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy, artillery service in the Philippines (1913-1915) and along the Mexican border (1915-1916). W.W. I service in France and Germany is recounted as are peacetime assignments at Fort Benjamin Harrison and Fort Sill.

Charles G. Helmick (1892-1991) was a Major General in the United States Army who served during World War I.Charles Gardiner Helmick (1892-1991) was born at Fort Sherman, Idaho, the son of Eli A. Helmick, who was an army officer. Charles Helmick entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1909. Shortly before graduation in 1913 he was found to be color blind.
